Layers.

The Layers project doubtlessly represents a reference landmark in Stavanger East neighborhood. Composed by an overlap of different stratums it is divided in a horizontal building and a vertical one of suspended floors. The project is included in the city with a certain rotation in relation to its grid, facing the exact South in order to get the most amount of sunlight possible. The layers that compose the building are highly permeable, as big holes cross them so the sunlight can get to every single part of the building. The promenades in the ground level plan interconnect transversally the two parks located in the East and South of the plot, and the basement of the building is entirely intended for electric car sharing.

The promenades in the ground level plan interconnect transversally the two parks located in the East and South of the plot, and the basement of the building is entirely intended for electric car sharing.
The building Layers reinterprets the classic concept of a business tower surrounded by green areas which are supposed to ‘serve the tower’; here a tower of nature is generated, formed by some ecosystems that grow vertically, presented as samples of the Norwegian biodiversity, with some areas destined to apiculture, an aviary and a whole floor dedicated to oceanography whose walls are formed by a surrounding fish tank. Besides, the horizontal building houses business and services areas (trade market, bars and restaurants, art gallery, co-working, offices and an Environmental School). The upper floor has its entire surface covered by greenhouses and areas assigned for farming.
The Project layers expand beyond the building itself as some farming plans are being created in some courtyards and roofs in the neighborhood. This expansion begins in the University roof, colonized by the farming of the project.
Therefore a whole net is generated around the neighborhood, creating a closed circuit of food production. The inhabitants of Stavanger East become producers, and the building Layers is the meeting point for the interchange of organic food.
An App linked to this Project has also been developed. By using it the neighbors that produce one single type of food can locate other producers of other kinds of food and barter it according to some values of exchange. The App allows people to make recommendations and reservations, and in the meantime it keeps all neighbors informed about all the activities that take place in the Layers building.
